One of the closest places to find great outdoor recreation is in the West Maui Forest Reserve. Some of Maui’s best hikes are located in this reserve, with views overlooking the rainforest valley and the ocean off in the distance. For a sandier experience, checks out Launiupoko Beach Park, just down the coast from Lahaina. It has some beautiful sandy beaches with a natural pool enclosed by a lava rock wall, making it the perfect swimming spot for kids. There’s also Iao Valley State Park, one of Maui’s most popular spots offering hiking trails, scenic drives, and views of the iconic Iao Needle. If a scenic drive is more your thing, check out the Hana Highway, the 65-mile-long coastal highway that stretches from Kahului to Hana. Winding its way through lush volcanic forests, it’s been rated as one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the country. While it’s not exactly close by Hawaiian standards at a 90-minute drive away, Haleakala National Park is an attraction not to be missed when you rent an RV in Lahaina. The peak for which the park is named is the highest in Hawaii at 10,023 feet. Over 30 miles of trail traverse the mountain, with difficulties ranging from easy strolls of less than half an hour to all-day climbs. Despite the tropical environment at the base of the mountain the summit is quite dry and free of vegetation. It’s one of the most sought-after locations for stargazing too, as the thinner atmosphere leads to less distortion of the stars and planets.
