Discover San Diego, CA

Rent an RV in San Diego, California and take advantage of the weather in one of the sunniest places in the United States. Coupled with its beachfront location, San Diego is the envy of many Lower 48 cities with neither beach nor sunshine in sight. Once the site of the US Navy Pacific Command Center, San Diego is now more of a resort city complete with an oceanarium (SeaWorld), safari park (San Diego Zoo Safari Park), spa resorts, laid-back beaches (and bronzed bodies), wineries, and bird- and whale-watching opportunities.

Should you decide to take your San Diego motorhome rental up north to San Francisco, you can take the Pacific Coast Highway (US Route 1) which starts just an hour north of the city. Or take the much shorter half-hour drive to the Tijuana (Mexico) border just because you can.

The Great Outdoors

San Diego's ocean-facing outlook means that you'll likely spend more time in and on the water than you would on land. After all, the city is blessed with 70 miles of glorious coastline perfect not only for surfing but also for cycling, viewing marine wildlife, and simply escaping the city crowd and contemplating.

For that unforgettable marine wildlife encounter, renting an RV in San Diego gets you close to La Jolla Cove where you can easily spot seals and sea lions. On the other hand, Cabrillo National Monument about 12 miles southwest of the city offers the best land-based vantage point to scope out migrating gray whales as they move south from Alaska to the lagoons of Baja California from December through mid-April.

Blue whales take their turn in the spring and summer months when they feed on massive quantities of krill in southern California waters. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and finback, humpback and minke whales which may join in the excitement. To see these behemoths of the deep up close, you can always sign up for a boat tour.

Less than 20 miles north but still within the city limits lies the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve where one of America's rarest trees still stand proud and strong. Locals come here to walk their dogs on miles of untouched beaches while hikers look forward to open trails that snake their way through coastal valleys made of red rock.

Bird lovers, on the other hand, might want to head south close to the Mexican border. The sand dunes and salt marshes of the Border Field State Park 15 miles south of San Diego provide refuge to endangered birds so it's a perfect destination for bird watchers.

Inland beckons with hiking trails and ancient cave decorations that are the major visitor draw of the Anza Borrego State Park. It's not two hours out of San Diego but it's already on the cusps of the great Colorado and Mojave deserts. For avid hikers who want to keep it close to the city, the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park entices with its wild patchwork of grassy trails, fir forests, and wide peninsula peaks. Here the feeling of isolation is real despite it being less than an hour's drive out of San Diego. The park will welcome your San Diego camper rental if you decide to stay here for a night or two. While there are no full hookups, some campgrounds have dump stations.

RV Parks

The availability of RV parks less than or within an hour's drive of the city center makes renting an RV in San Diego, CA a lot easier because it won’t be as challenging to connect to the city’s public transport system.

If you wish to be within striking distance of the seals and sea lions but still want to be close to downtown San Diego, Santa Fe Park RV Resort and Mission Bay RV Resort are both less than 10 miles from La Jolla Cove. Book an RV in San Diego and have the best of both worlds.

Santa Fe Park RV Resort offers full hookups and plenty of swimming, recreation and fitness facilities. A combination of the Coaster commuter train and the San Diego trolley brings you downtown. Three Walmarts and three gas stations are 10-20 minutes away.

SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, Legoland, Mission San Diego and the Gaslamp Quarter are a half-hour's drive away. Several gas stations are within 10 minutes' drive while a Walmart is less than 15 minutes away.

Away from the coast but less than 20 minutes' drive from the city is the centrally located San Diego RV Resort offering full hookups for electricity, water, sewer, and cable. The RV park is literally steps away from the trolley, which can get you anywhere around town. Get on this "moving landmark" to get to the Old Town, Gaslamp Quarter, the stadium, Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld, Legoland and loads of shopping options.

Exploring the City

Simply hop onto the bright red trolley to get to your downtown destination. The trolley is linked to the Coaster commuter train, which in turn connects fully with the Pacific Surfliner of Amtrak. So if your RV is parked in the city or farther inland, you can simply make the necessary connections to get oceanside.
