Discover Tahoe City, CA

Tahoe City is a small northern California town located about an hour from Reno or Carson City in Nevada. It’s a popular summer and winter vacation destination for those living in the Bay Area a few hours away.

Most of the activity in Tahoe City is centered around the namesake lake, which provides ample recreational opportunities including kayaking, sailing, and hiking on the trails surrounding it. In the winter, Tahoe City swells with skiers visiting the six resorts nearby: Sierra at Tahoe, Kirkwood, Sugar Bowl Resort, Northstar California, Heavenly Mountain Resort, and of course the most famous, Squaw Valley-Alpine Meadows.

Due to its high elevation, Tahoe City sees over 150 inches of snow each year and temperatures rarely exceed eighty degrees in the summer. That being said, it only has a few weeks of below-freezing temperatures each year, making for a relatively mild climate - perfect for your Tahoe City RV rental vacation.

RV Parks near Tahoe City

The sheer number of campgrounds surrounding the lake means that when you book an RV in Tahoe City, you won’t have trouble finding a place to park. One of the closest campgrounds to Tahoe City is William Kent Campground, which is just two miles to the south of town. Reservations can be made in advance and flush toilets and drinking water are provided; no hookups though. Another minimal amenities options is Lake Forest Campground a few miles north of Tahoe City. Its 20 sites have outhouse-style bathrooms and a drinking water pump. About ten miles up Highway 89 you’ll find Silver Creek and Goose Meadow Campgrounds, both of which have outhouse style bathrooms and drinking water provided. These campgrounds are open only during the summer months, usually from Memorial Day to sometime in mid-September.

For sites with full hookups and more amenities, there are a few RV parks in the area, too, including Coachland RV Park and Truckee River RV Park in Truckee, the Tahoe Valley RV Resort & Campground, and the Lake Tahoe KOA, close to Meyers on the lake’s southern tip.

One of the downsides to staying in Tahoe City is that you won’t be close to many large stores or truck stops. The closest Walmart is in Carson City, an hour away, while the closest place to conveniently get fuel is at Emigrant Gap on Interstate 80, over half an hour from Tahoe City. Be sure to stock up on fuel and supplies before heading down to the lake.

Exploring Tahoe City

As with many tourist-centered towns, there’s plenty to see and do with the RV rental in Tahoe City.

To understand the history of the Tahoe City, start your vacation at the North Lake Tahoe Historical Society and Gatekeepers Museum. Built inside the lake gatekeeper’s cabin (the person who would open up the dam on the lake), it showcases some interesting exhibits from the area’s early mining and logging period along with artifacts from the more modern era as a resort town. Another must visit is the Trunk Show art gallery and store, which features some of the best works from artisans in the Tahoe region and is a great place to find a souvenir of your travels.

For an adventurous afternoon, head to Tahoe Treetop Adventure Park with zip lines and obstacles courses that are sure to excite the whole family. In the evening, visit the Tahoe Art Haus and Cinema, which plays Hollywood blockbusters alongside indie classics inside a beautiful old theater. They even have several craft beers and ciders on tap along with kombucha.

Getting Outside Near Tahoe City

Whether it’s for the stellar skiing opportunities or just a lazy day out on the lake, most visitors to Tahoe City are coming to spend some time outside. With your Tahoe City RV rental, you’ll have the freedom to go where you please and take your accommodations with you, so there’s no excuse for the not enjoying all that the mountains have to offer.

If you’re visiting with the Tahoe City motorhome rental during the summer, you’ll definitely want to hike at least a few of the great trails around the lake, starting with Eagle Falls. This easy two-mile-long trail shows off Tahoe’s amazing mountain scenery and ends at the 82-foot-tall falls. If you’re not up for a jaunt in the woods, just take a scenic drive to Inspiration Vista on the lake’s southwestern edge; the views of sunrise and sunset are spectacular there.

For winter fun, pull on some skates and enjoy Tahoe City’s outdoor ice rink or try sledding at Granlibakken Tahoe. Both are loads of fun. However, you should definitely set aside a day for skiing and snowboarding at one of the resorts in the area, too.

Tahoe National Forest is about 50 miles northeast of Tahoe City. This expansive 850,000-acre forest features breathtaking views, varied terrain and many diverse ecosystems. Trails wind around the banks of rushing mountain rivers, and historic trails and sites can be found throughout the forest.

If you’d like to see something truly unique while still avoiding the crowds, take the Tahoe City rental RV to Lassen Volcanic National Park, three hours to the northwest. It has some of the same fascinating geological features as Yellowstone (albeit on a smaller scale) like steaming fumaroles and bursting geysers. It’s one of the less visited sites in the national parks system, but that just means you won’t have to push your way through crowds to get a good view.

Great spot in Truckee to stay. Close to lots of activities, and easy in/out. Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe are 15 / 30 mins away respectively. There's also Prosser & Stampede lakes close by.

Epic sandwiches at Truckee favorite Deli. I recommend the Dirka Dirka on Jalapeno Cheddar bread. Soooo Goood.

Burger Me has been on the Food Channel and serves up some awesome eats. Parking is tricky depending on the time of day. We suggest parking next to the roundabout next to the train tracks if in the RV

Convenient dump station right off of I80 in Truckee, they also have propane and a full gas station/food shop.

Coachland is a great RV park located in Truckee that works in a pinch for either Propane or as a dump station. It's a great place to stay nearby as well. Close access to everything Truckee!
