Discover Guelph, ON

Known as the “Royal City”, Guelph is located on the southwestern end of the Toronto metropolitan area, about an hour from Toronto and half an hour from Kitchener. The city was named in honor of the family of King George IV who had the surname Guelph. Guelph is one of the larger cities that makes up the urban areas on Lake Erie’s western shore, where much of the Canadian population lives. Despite being part of such a populated area, Guelph doesn’t feel like a distant suburb of a major city, but rather a city that stands on its own.

The city of Guelph operates its own public transportation system with around 30 bus routes. It can be quite convenient if you happen to be going somewhere that’s along the route, but since parking is not terribly limited, many visitors choose to park their Guelph RV rental in the city.

RV Parks Near Guelph

There’s no shortage of RV parks here, so you’ll have plenty to choose from when you book an RV in Guelph. Gulliver’s Lake RV Resort and Campground is about 30 minutes to the southeast of the city and not too far from the shores of Lake Erie. The 14-acre lake adjacent to the campground has kayak, paddleboard, and paddle boat rentals available if you’re looking to get out on the water. Another option is the Country Gardens RV Park 40 minutes to the south. While it is a little farther away, it has almost 250 sites, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a place to park your rental RV near Guelph, ON.

If RV parks aren’t your style, the Guelph Lake Conservation Area has sites with hookups and sites without them available for rent. Boats can be rented on Guelph Lake and there are tons of hiking trails that make this the nice campground for someone wanting to spend their vacation outside.

A final couple of options for the area include the Toronto West KOA Holiday Campground and the Olympia Village RV Park and Campground. They’re both around a half hour to the southeast of the city and have amenities like hookups, kitchen facilities, and bike rentals. Your only limit will be how far you’re willing to drive your Guelph motorhome rental each time you want to go into the city.

The Walmart Supercenter on the western edge of the city is a great place to pick up extra supplies and there are plenty of gas stations around town when it comes time to fuel up the RV rental in Guelph.

Exploring the City of Guelph

To get a sense of the city, the first place you should turn to is the Guelph Civic Museum, which houses a collection of artifacts from the city’s history inside a beautiful stone building. From there you might want to check out the Hammond Museum of Radio, which focuses on the history of wireless communication or the Halton County Radial Railway in nearby Milton, where you’re allowed to ride some of the train cars dating back to the 1930s. Both are niche attractions, but that’s the whole point of having the freedom of renting an RV, seeing the sights that others may have passed over. If you’re a fan of architecture or history, you’ll probably want to visit some of the beautiful churches in the area including Church of Our Lady Immaculate, St. George’s Anglican Church, and Royal City Church.

Aberfoyle Antique Market has some of the most unique products that you could ask for. It’s actually Canada’s largest outdoor antique market and is open every Sunday during the warmer months. Another offbeat option is Old Quebec Street, which is more of a covered ‘arcade’ filled with quaint shops. For a more conventional retail experience, the Stone Road Mall has most of the standard mall stores on site.

Getting Outside Near Guelph

At the center of town is Royal Center Park, a sprawling greenway that lines both sides of the Eramosa River. These pathways are excellent for walking the dog, going for a stroll, or hopping on your bike for a quick ride. Riverside Park, on the city’s northwest corner, is smaller than Royal Center but has the same types of trails lining the sides of the Speed River that flows through the park. The Guelph Lake Conservation area is another great spot for enjoying nature close to the city as it’s only 20 miles north of it. Beachgoers flock to the sand adjacent to Guelph Lake, where they soak up some rays and listen to sounds of the waves rolling in.

None of Ontario’s national parks are particularly close by, but if you’re up for an extended adventure with your Guelph camper rental, Georgian Bay Islands National Park, in the province’s upper reaches and a little over two hours away, is a fantastic destination. The park doesn’t get too many visitors, so campsites are uncrowded and ferries visit some of the islands’ most scenic locations.
