Discover Mississauga, ON
Mississauga, Ontario is a magnificent city in the suburbs of Toronto, the largest city in Canada. Mississauga comes from the local indigenous language word for “those at the great river mouth” due to the city’s positioning at the mouth of the Credit River’s outflow into Lake Ontario. Mississauga has eight miles of incredible lakefront access which first drew city dwellers from Toronto to the area to build vacation homes along the water’s edge a hundred years ago.
The fast-growing multicultural city is an interesting place to visit, and even better when you book an RV in Mississauga with the intention of exploring out into the farthest stretches of Ontario. The Toronto Pearson International Airport is actually located in Mississauga, and the city has three different railways including one along the Quebec-Windsor corridor, so it's quite easy to reach Windsor, Quebec City, and Montreal from the metropolitan area. Once you are in town, you rarely need to use your Mississauga RV rental for anything other than sleeping because the public transportation masterfully links together all there is to see in the many surrounding towns and cities, including Toronto.
The best reason for staying in Mississauga is the many events and festivities that the city celebrates each year. Carassauga is one of the largest festivals in Canada. Different pavilions are set up to showcase the many different cultures of Mississauga, and public transportation is free for the day. Muslimfest, Fiesta Ng Kalayaan, and the Viet Summerfest are all other examples of amazing cultural events that make the city such an interesting place to rent an RV and take a memorable vacation.
Experience the Sites and Scenery
Ontario, and all of Canada for that matter, has some amazingly beautiful forests and mountains, and shows an extreme appreciation for all outdoor recreation, too. Mississauga is no exception with its 560 miles of bicycle trails and friendly paths for pedestrians, rollerbladers, skateboarders, and anyone else to safely travel about. Mississauga also has some pretty lovely parks, especially along its stretch of waterfront. The Rattray Marsh Conservation Area seeks to protect local wildlife, while allowing visitors to use its boardwalks to walk around and see the singing birds that call the wetland home. Despite being in a large city, Rattray Marsh is remarkably peaceful.
Jack Darling Memorial Park is a great place to cool off in the summertime in the refreshing waters of Lake Ontario. Two large picnic areas and a playground are other great reasons to visit this splendid waterfront park, too. Lakefront Promenade Park has two boat launch spots, a web of paved trails, and a marina with sailboats coming and going out into the lake.
Taking your Mississauga camper rental outside the city is advisable if you want to see the wilderness areas that Canada is well known for. Kawartha Highlands Regional Park is a wonderful spot to kayak or canoe on one of the Kawartha Lakes, about a 90-minute drive from the Toronto metro area. Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park invites visitors to enjoy its spectacular fly fishing, canoeing, hiking, and many other recreational activities.
Algonquin Provincial Park is the oldest of its kind in the country, with close proximity to both Ottawa and Toronto. This majestic park was named a national historic site in 1992 for its contribution to the parks program, incredible old buildings and cabins, and for fostering a sense of pride among Canadians.
Pukaskwa National Park is known for having the longest undeveloped stretch of coastline in the Great Lakes region and has 725 square miles of waterfalls, winding rivers, and serene forest land. Don’t forget to take your Mississauga motorhome rental to the magical Niagara Falls just south of the city, to gaze upon the world-famous waterfall that brings in millions of people each year to witness its great beauty.
Due to its proximity to Toronto, Mississauga has unlimited options as far as attractions go, not to mention the wealth of world-class restaurants, rooftop sky bars, and retail shopping centers. Believe it or not, Mississauga is incredible in its own right and you don’t need to even go to Toronto to enjoy yourself (although Toronto is quite amazing, too). Mississauga Celebration Square is one of the main focal points of the city, where countless events are hosted throughout the year. Stages, gaming fields, entertainment options, and restaurants are some of the offerings within the square. Family Day is held every Wednesday, Vintage Car Night every Thursday, and the yearly celebration of Canada Day is attended by too many people to count. Next door is the Art Gallery of Mississauga which hosts tons of live events and offers free tours as well. Across the street is the Living Arts Centre, an incredible facility that houses multiple theaters, art galleries, lecture spaces, and workshops. Over 300,000 people visit this space each year in search of culture and entertainment. The Absolute World Towers have become somewhat iconic in the city with their funky architecture and peculiar construction patterns. CN Tower in Toronto is one of the main attractions in the area, so don’t limit yourself to one place.
Being such an accommodating city, there are several Walmart Supercenter stores in the area, and countless places to fuel up, shop for supplies, and stay overnight in your motorhome rental near Mississauga. Flamboro Valley Camping Resort has a pond, a hot tub, heated pool, sports fields, walking paths, and many other amenities to keep you occupied on vacation.
Toronto West KOA provides quality amenities as well as a dog park for your pets, and a pool open during the summer months. Milton Heights Campground has a convenient grocery store on site but is minutes away from public transportation stops so you can get whatever you need to go.
Indian Line Campground is yet another place you can park overnight when you rent an RV, with a camp store, a pool, and playground for the children. There are far more options than the ones listed above so don’t be afraid to do a little digging around for something that might appeal to you more.
