Discover Panama City, FL
Like many other towns in North Florida, the one-time “Floriopolis” is rediscovering itself. The historic downtown has recently been revitalized, and people remember what drew them to the Panama City-Lynn Haven area to begin with. Those drawing cards include things like stunning scenery, good year-round weather, and a unique Northern Florida vibe. You only experience some of these things from a hotel room, and such accommodations are not really suitable for snowbirds. So, whatever draws you to town, you need to book an RV in Panama City.
Experience the Sites and Scenery
St. Andrews State Park is one of the most popular parks in the Florida Panhandle. With two-and-a-half miles of beach as well as outstanding indoor facilities, like a state-of-the-art visitor’s center, it is easy to see why. Other activities include boating, canoeing, camping, and fishing off one of the Park’s two large fishing piers.
St. Andrews Bay is a vast, 69,000-acre estuary that was once home to a major Civil War salt works. That’s because the deep water and slight freshwater flow give the waters a very high saline content. Large schools of trout, redfish, and even manatees move freely in these waters. Dolphins are also clearly visible as well, especially in the mornings when the waters are calmer.
To see one of the nicest beaches in the area, drive your Panama City rental RV to Shell Island Beach. Since it’s almost completely undeveloped, the water is pristine and the beaches are made entirely of white, grainy sand. Check out one of the organized dolphin cruises, or do stuff on your own, such as kayaking, snorkeling, and paddleboarding.
No Panama City RV rental excursion is complete without a stop at a place like Gator Lake, which is in nearby Panama City Beach. You might or might not see a gator, but visitors are almost certain to see lots of other wildlife, such as deer, softshell turtles, snipes, stilts, rails, wood ducks, herons, egrets, ibises, osprey, and eagles. Like North Florida itself, this park is a good combination of the beach and the marshland.
For many visitors, Historic St. Andrews is one of the first items on the travel agenda. Here, things are very much the same as they were two hundred years ago. So, visitors get a better understanding of what life was like here as they explore the region in their Panama City motorhome rentals. Some attractions include vintage letterpresses that are still in use, as well as the weekend farmers market. To see what’s new in the world, try WonderWorks. On the outside, it looks like an upside-down building. On the inside, it contains over a hundred hands-on, infotaining exhibits. Stretch your imagination with things like the natural disasters and space exhibits. For a change of pace, check out the ropes course or play a round or two of laser tag. If you’re looking for something a little more museum-y, try the Science and Discovery Center of Northwest Florida. Its exhibits and activities are more geared toward younger children. After all, the Museum includes an onsite preschool. Some of the aforementioned activities include a real nature trail, live reptiles, a very cool play area, and a number of natural history displays.
By many definitions, Panama City is a small town. Yet it’s also one of the largest cities in the Florida Panhandle. So, it has the features of both a throbbing urban center and a quiet small town. That combination attracts lots of short and long-term visitors in their Panama City motorhome rentals. The area also offer a nice mix of indoor and outdoor activities, which is something of a rarity in this area.
Where to Park It
One of the best places to take your camper rental in Panama City is the Panama City Beach RV Resort. Each one of its sixty-nine sites features full hookups and luxury extras, like private beach access. There’s a free community breakfast every Saturday, a very large dog park, and all the facilities you’d expect at an RV resort. For something a little more secluded, check out Augie’s World Campground RV Park in nearby Calhoun County. While it has a very rustic atmosphere, this park also has large bathroom and other facilities. Guests also enjoy fishing and many other outdoor activities. The Emerald Coast RV Beach Resort costs a little more, but it’s worth the extra money. It has two heated swimming pools, a very modern fitness center, huge clubhouse, and more. Plus it’s within walking distance of some area theme parks and museums.
Of course, Florida means fresh Gulf seafood. You really haven’t experienced shrimp until you’ve grilled it on your own Florida barbecue pit or enjoyed it in one of Panama City’s many fine restaurants. There’s also a strong hint of Cuban and other ethnic foods on the menu.
