If you have a particular interest in the large raptors and birds of prey that can be found in mountainous regions, then spend the afternoon at the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area. Just 65 miles west of Mountain Home near Murphy, this nature preserve is home to roughly 800 nesting raptors. While not the whole park is accessible to the public, you can still hike along one of the trails and keep your eyes on the skies to catch a glimpse of some of these magnificent creatures. With 10 different species commonly spotted in the park, you may see an agile red-tailed hawk, a clever turkey vulture, or maybe even an enormous golden eagle. About 150 miles to the northeast of Mountain Home is the entrancing Sawtooth National Forest. Right in the middle of Idaho, here you’ll be able to hike along one of the countless trails that wind through the park. You’ll be mesmerized by the towering mountain views and the deep valleys filled with sapphire lakes. If you have some experience mountain climbing, you can work your way up some of these powerful geologic formations and get an unforgettable view of the Sawtooth Range or Boulder Range. If you’d rather partake in an activity a little less involved, or maybe you just want to take in all of your surroundings, you can unwind by the shores of Alturas Lake, Pettit Lake, Redfish Lake, or Stanley Lake. In the Idaho High Country, Payette National Forest is broken up by towering peaks that are nearly 9,500 feet high. At over 2.3 million acres, there are hundreds of miles of trails that you can explore. Maybe you’ll find a waterfall, or some bright wildflowers, and even some WWII plane wreckage. Regardless, the untamed Idahoan wilderness is enough to delight and inspire anyone who spends time in this wonderland.
