The last US model of the Volkswagen Westfalias is here and is great for tooling around Maui. This is the weekender addition which does not have the built in sink, stove, and closet and because of this, the back seat now folds down to a large queen size bed and it has a more open feeling compared to the full camper Westfalias. It's easy to drive, looks like a local car, and has all of the nostalgic VW camping experiences with the pop-top that has a small full sized bed, a fold out kitchen table, and a swiveling front seat.We have taken the stock Westfalia and have done the following:
- 3" memory foam mattress topper for lower bed
- Added a swivel seat base to the passenger front seat.
- Added a lockable metal safe below the front passenger seat
- Added an 8' x 8' retractable Fiamma awning
- Added a 35 quart Dometic refrigerator.
- Added a pressurized 7 gallon hot shower system
- Removed the rear facing seats for more room and effective use of the swiveling passenger seat
- Upgraded stereo with Bluetooth and Aux/USB inputs
- Tinted the windows for cooler vehicle and great privacy
- Super comfy floor mats in the front and back makes cleaning sand out a cinch
- 12V and 120V AC electrical system including:
- 200w solar panel
- 100AH Lithium Iron Phosphate house battery
- 2000W pure sine wave inverter
- 12V Vent fan to extract warmer air from inside the van
- 2 small 12V fans to keep you cool when you sleep at night
- 8 high power USB outlets throughout the van
These electrical upgrades will allow you to charge your phones, tablets, computers all night long as well as providing lighting and air circulation in the van for some comfortable sleeping at night. This is a huge thing. Sleeping in a van with no moving air gets very stagnant and makes for a bad night's sleep. The 2000w inverter provides enough power to power a blender, blow drier, or any appliance you can throw at it and it produces a pure sine wave which will not damage sensitive electronics. We also have everything you might need to go camping.
- Bath towel for each person
- Beach towel for each person
- Beach chair for each person
- Maps and and tour guide book
- Lantern and flashlight
- Pots, pans and miscellaneous cooking utensils
- Bed linens and pillows
- First aid kit
- Fire extinguisher
- Stove and propane
- Camp Table
- Grill
- Tent
- Soap
Arriving:Once you arrive at the Kahului Airport (OGG), you can grab a cab or rideshare right next to baggage claim and take it to our facility which is 2 miles (3-4 min & ~ $10) away from the terminal. Once you arrive at our facility, we will go over the campervan with you and teach you how to use it as well as noting any previous damage prior to you taking off. We'll then sign some paperwork and you're off. This process will take around 20 minutes or so.Once you are finished with your trip, we will meet you back in the same parking lot and check you back in. The airport is a few minutes away and you can once again grab a cab or rideshare for around $10 to get you back to the terminal. If you require to pick-up or drop-off the campervan somewhere other than the OGG airport, we will charge you $7 per mile from the airport. Some things to note since you are renting out a vehicle:
- All drivers must be 25 years of age or older.
- All drivers will need to sign Campervan Hawaii's Standard Vehicle Rental Agreement.
- We will need a copy of driver'(s) licenses for every driver.
- If you come from outside the US, then we will need a copy of all passports for every driver.
- We include pretty much everything you need to campervan in Maui but do offer some extra items you might be interested in renting.
- $25 per trip - Children's car seat
- $25 per trip - Waterproof bluetooth speaker
- $25 per trip - Extra bed linen set
- $45 per trip - 4 person tent
- $15 per trip - Extra camp chair
Insurance:***** You are 100% responsible for damage done to the exterior and interior of the vehicle. Because of this, we require this vehicle to be insured by you during the rental. There are two options for this:
1) If your personal vehicle has full coverage insurance (and you are from the US or Canada) then most likely, this rental is covered under your own insurance but any modifications are not including the awning, pop-tops, roadshowers, vinyl wraps, etc.. In this case, you must provide us with a declaration page from your insurance company showing your coverages and proof that your insurance covers this rental vehicle along with its modifications.
2) If you do not have full coverage, live outside the US and Canada, or just want to purchase insurance so you do not have to use your own personal insurance, then we can provide full coverage insurance on the campervan with a $750 deductible. The rate is tiered based on the amenities you choose. Pricing is available to see during check-out.
Camping:The great thing about renting a campervan is you get to find your own neighborhood. There are 6 great spots where you can reserve to campervan in Maui.
1) Waianapanapa State Park - This is a great spot near Hana and has some beautiful quiet and shaded camping. There is a black sand beach and a great 3 mile loop hike with some spectacular views of the Hana Coast and the slopes of Haleakala. There are only bathroom facilities here but no drinking water.
2) Kipahulu (Haleakala National Park) - There is great shaded camping here and great short hikes. Pipiwai Trail is a 4 miles round trip trail that winds through a freshwater stream and diverse forest areas with views of waterfalls and other natural features. This is where the Seven Sacred Pools is located. This area has picnic tables, BBQ grills and outdoor pit toilets but no drinking water.
3) Hosmer Grove ( (Haleakala National Park) - This Campground lies in the cloud belt of Haleakalā, just below the 7,000-foot level (2134m) in the summit area. Be prepared for rain and cold weather. Nighttime temperatures can drop into the to near
freezing (0°C); daytime highs average 50-65°F (10-18°C). The campground has picnic tables, BBQ grills, drinking water, and pit toilets. There is great birdwatching and a chance to catch a rare siting of the Iwi’iwi which is one of Hawaii’s rare birds that only eats nectar from native Hawaiian plants.
4) Papalaua Wayside County Park - This park lies along Honoapiilani Hwy #30 on the way to Lahaina along a sandy beach with excellent snorkeling and great SUPboarding. Shade is provided by kiawe trees. No water supply available and it has portable toilets and BBQ grills.
5) Camp Olowalu - Recently renovated, the camp is on the ocean along Hwy 30 about 6 miles south of Lahaina at Olowalu. It is in a grove of mature trees with picnic tables, drinking water, showers and toilets. Swimming and snorkeling are good and in the winter months a nice place to watch whales. This campground has laundry facilities and free Wifi.
You can pretty much take this campervan anywhere the roads go. The five spots mentioned above are the campsites where you can reserve but there are numerous other spots where you can find a private place to camp and are off the beaten path. We'll tell you more about this after you reserve.

"We started renting campervans out of our love for being on the road and sleeping in a different spot every night and are excited to share our favorite way to travel with other outdoor and van life enthusiasts. We’ve been exploring the mainland by van for over 20 years and love the freedom it provides. After our last extended vacation in our mainland home-on-wheels we realized it would be a great way to explore these island gems of Hawai'i! When home is where you park it, there are more hours to play the day away!"

My experience has not been great, I had a lot of problems and obstacles that I wouldn’t recommend this company.

I traveled with my 12 year old daughter and this was so awesome to be able to experience the whole island and wake up with new beautiful scenery. I can not imagine traveling any other way. The van was loaded with everything you need, and was great on gas/ space/efficiency. This was a great time we will forever remember. 10/10 Thanks Guys.

The whole experience from picking up the van and dropping it off was fantastic. This VW far surpassed our expectations and the custom renovation made our adventure stress free on all accounts. Shout out to John for going above and beyond getting us all set up. Thanks crew
