Complete with a dreamy micro-foam full bed, ventilation fan, ceiling lights, electrical outlets, chest fridge (with a freezer component), portable stove, swivel seats and swivel table (so you can eat inside if it's raining), compostable toilet, foot pump sink (with a 6 gallon tank) and an manual foot pump outdoor shower to meet all your needs as you explore the road less traveled around the island.
With tons of storage below the bed for suitcases, beach toys, and more, you’ll be able to pack in everything you need!
Bertha includes: fresh linens, towels, kitchenware and cookware (skillets, pots, bowls), coffee grinder and french press, basic spices, utensils, a can opener, wine opener, garlic press, grater, cooking spoons, as well as a portable camping stove and butane (can cook inside or outside), and an outdoor mat to help keep things clean.
For additional charges, Bertha can include:
Two camping/beach chairs
Large beach umbrella
Surf board
Inflatable Paddle Board
Two boogie boards
Two floatation inner-tubes
Some details you won’t see, but will benefit from include non-toxic havelock sheeps wool insulation to keep the van cooler longer, prevent moisture, and reduce noise from outside while you sleep.
They don’t call the island of Hawai’i “The Big Island” for nothing - it’s huge! Exploring via camper van is one of the best ways to see all the sites and avoid excessive driving (and costs) between your lodging and next adventure.
If you’ve rented a camper van on the mainland before, you should know it’s a little different on the Big Island. It’s technically illegal to sleep in a vehicle in public spaces. I have put together a map of spots on the island where you could park overnight - secret spots, campgrounds that you will need to obtain a permit beforehand, and places to park in a pinch. My renters have had no issues with just a little bit of forethought and being mindful of where I park overnight. I give you everything you need to plan in advance (the more you prep, the better your stay will be!).
Pickup and Drop off: Pickup is after 4pm or later and dropped off by 10 am.
Pets are welcome!
If you can find a festival, you are welcome to take her there!
No smoking
Prohibited areas:
Due to Bertha not having 4WD, you are not permitted to take her to Makalawena Beach, Green Sands Beach, Waipio Valley, or past the Visitor Center at Mauna Kea. You may hire local services to take you to these locations in a 4x4 vehicle. The van is equipped with a GPS that will alert us if she is in any of these locations, at which point you will be fined $1,000 in addition to the cost of any damage to the vehicle (which there undoubtedly will be, assuming you are even able to get the van back to the road, which you will not).

The big island can be a lot to do, specially if you are planning to to back to your stay by the end of the day. Thanks to Bertha, we were able to sleep at our destinations. We were able to easily sleep near volcanoes national park and the beach and cook our own meals. I definitely recommend.
