Manhattan is the county seat of Riley County, in the state of Kansas. It is a midsize city and is relatively easy to explore on foot, depending on where you're going to. It also means that the city has the best of both worlds, city creature comforts with small town hospitality. The area where it now sits was first settled in 1854 under the name “Polistra”.

In April of 1855, a group of New Englanders combined Polistra with neighboring Canton and renamed the new community Boston. A few months later, in June, a group of Ohio settlers heading for what is now Junction City ran their boat aground on the Kansas River, not far from Boston. They accepted an offer to join the community, on the condition that it be named Manhattan. The New Englanders agreed and it was incorporated as Manhattan on May 30, 1857. Today it is nicknamed “the little apple” (presumably a comparison to New York's or the Big Apple's Manhattan district) and no trip here would be complete without a photo of your Manhattan RV rental next to the city's welcome sign.

Manhattan is home to Kansas State University and has a university-town feel (lots of young adults burning off post-exam stress), although the students tend to congregate in a particular area of the city, Aggieville. Other cities within traveling range that can be enjoyed are Wamego, Randolph, Junction City, Herington, and Council Grove.
