Observatory Park is a well-hidden gem, just 25 miles south of town. It is one of a few telescope observatories around the world that were established in 1899 to measure the “wobble” of Earth. There’s plenty of history here and for those who love science or just a great stroll around on a glorious day, you can learn a lot about how people operated the telescope here and enjoy a peaceful and quiet interlude. Travis Park offers some play equipment for children. Across the street is a small shopping center. The grounds are well-maintained and clean. If you are fortunate on the particular day you visit, you may see some deer and other wildlife tramping through the grounds.
