Discover Oneonta, NY

The city of Oneonta in New York is surrounded by the town of Oneonta, a separate municipal division. The origin of the city's name is unclear, but it is thought to be part of the Mohawk indigenous language. Well before it was settled in 1775, Algonquin and Iroquoian tribes called the area home. After this date, lots of Dutch and German settlers begin to move to the area, bringing with them their own cultures.

Geographically speaking, Oneonta is approximately halfway between New York City and Syracuse, in the northern foothills of the Catskills Mountains. It is conveniently located on Interstate 88, ensuring that it is easy to travel to and from town when you book an RV in Oneonta and want to explore the fabulous Empire State. With pleasant views of the Susquehanna River, delightful public parks, gorgeous old Victorian homes, and a few universities, Oneonta is a diverse and wonderful place to not only live but to visit. All of this becomes abundantly clear when you rent an RV in Oneonta and begin the trip of your dreams.

The Great Outdoors

Oneonta is located in Upstate New York, a place far removed from the sprawling metropolis of New York City. In fact, the countryside around Oneonta couldn’t be any less like the big city, with dozens of state forests and parks crowded around it.

Gilbert Lake State Park is one place you might want to visit with your Oneonta RV rental, known for being one of the state’s very first parks. Lake of the Twin Fawns and Gilbert Lake can both be found at this fabulous state park, complete with swimming areas, sandy beaches, docks, boat rentals, cabins, and a campground where you can stay with the Oneonta motorhome rental. On top of that, there is a disc golf course, a series of hunting and fishing areas, a playground for young ones, a nature center and museum, and a network of hiking trails.

Glimmerglass State Park is located north of Oneonta on Otsego Lake, home to a massive mansion called Hyde Hall which was built in the early 19th century. This spectacular home sits on the shores of Otsego Lake, with extraordinary views of the water and the sandy beach behind it. There are concession stands, a campground, swimming areas, and in the winter time, you can ice skate or cross-country ski on the park's snowy trails.

Over by Oneida on Oneida Lake, Verona Beach State Park is yet another lakefront park you can’t miss when you rent an RV in Oneonta, NY and set out to search for the state’s finest recreation areas. There are four miles of hiking trails and an additional eight miles of mountain biking and horseback riding trails that can be used for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing each winter. There are long stretches of beach, concession stands, bathhouses, and a campground that can accommodate you when you choose to stay the night.

The northeast portion of New York consists of lots of smaller wilderness areas that you can explore. Places like the Five Ponds Wilderness, High Peaks Wilderness, West Canada Lake Wilderness, and Adirondack State Park make up a massive chunk of undeveloped land in the region, an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. No matter where you opt to stay the night, you won’t be disappointed in this charming scenic area, or anywhere in the state, for that matter.
