It was established in 1886 under the name “Frazer,” as a Great Western Cattle Trail trading post; cowboys could purchase buttermilk here, and it became known locally as “Buttermilk Station.” A post office was established in 1886 under the name Frazer, but a flash flood destroyed the town and post office in 1891. The residents moved their town to higher ground and renamed it “Altus” (Latin for “high”); the name stuck.
