Discover Dover, PA

The township of Dover, PA was officially formed in 1747, though there were farmers and settlers in the area long before. Several homes built in early and mid-1800s were built on top of older homes. As an example, the Dover Hotel, which was built in 1809, is on the site of a “public house” built in 1752. One of the oldest homes, which has been dated to at least 1744, was relocated to Dover Community Park and carefully restored to its original condition using as much of the original wood as possible. This part of south-central Pennsylvania is awash with history.

The closest large town is York, under eight miles to the southeast. To the north, Harrisburg is about 25 miles. Gettysburg is about 30 miles southwest. Lancaster is a little over 35 miles to the east.

The Great Outdoors

When you rent an RV in Dover, you’ll likely want to enjoy the outdoors and an array of recreational activities in the area. Gifford Pinchot State Park is a fair-sized park very close by, and it’s RV-friendly. Swallowtail butterflies are known to stop at this park during their migration during the summer months. Hike and bike in this park. A few different species of bass and bluegills are abundant in the lake. Fish from the banks or on a small boat.

The Roundtop Mountain Resort is also close by. In the summer months, the hill is used for children’s camps and paintball fun. During the winters, it’s an ideal place to learn the basics of skiing and, for the brave and daring, there are a couple black diamond trails.

Seeking solitude and quiet? Hit the road in your Dover camper trailer and head west to the Michaux State Forest. Adventure is yours to choose from. Engage in recreational activities like primitive camping, hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, and snowmobiling. There are several small lakes and ponds dotting its grounds, and over 130 miles of trails wind through mature groves and meadows. RV camping is allowed, though you must obtain a free permit from the ranger.

RV Parks

When you rent a Dover motorhome, you’ll need someplace to park it for the night or longer. Cedar Lake Family Campgrounds is just a few minutes away. The large, upscale campground offers amenities like full hookups, a seven-acre fishing pond, live bands, planned activities, and more.

If you want to “rough it,” RV camping is welcome at both Gifford Pinchot and Michaux parks, though space can be limited at Gifford Pinchot during the summer months.

On occasion, you’ll need to make an unplanned stop overnight. There is a Walmart store in northwestern York, just minutes away, and camping may be allowed at this location. Be sure to ask for permission beforehand.

Exploring the City

Dive into history with your Dover motorhome rental. Visit the historic Gettysburg Park and learn about President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and the events of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. Wrap up your day by going on a scenic drive through the towns dotting the landscape. Many homes in the area are historic, dating back to the founding of this nation. Dover, likewise, has several homes dating back to early 1800s. Dover Historical Society has a self-guided tour detailing the history of some of the more notable homes and businesses that are still standing today.

Head east across the river and join a tour of the Lancaster countryside and learn about the Amish communities that thrive in the area. One of the earliest settlers in the area, some families have been on their farms for generations. Though most are private and reclusive, a few have opened their doors to the public. Be sure to grab the original Whoopie Pie while you’re there, too!

Hungry for an adventure and chocolate double-whammy? Swing by Hershey in your motorhome rental from Dover. As you roll into town, you’ll be greeted by the smell of chocolate wafting through the air from the nearby factories, and dozens of confectioneries lining the main street. In wintertime, the whole town is decorated with festive streamers, themed chocolate decorations, and lights. The small adventure park showcases dozens of roller coaster rides created by top-notch designers that rivals the top adventure parks in the country.

The mild temperature and the soft terrain makes it an ideal place for wineries. There are several in the area. Try Four Springs Vineyard or the Sunset View Farm and Vineyard, which specializes in dry reds. If wines aren’t your preferred drink, Bald Hills Distillery has been in production for over 100 years, but only just recently went “legal.” The Distillery offers three different types of moonshine and has a tasting room that showcases their drinks and a few other local wines and microbrews, as well. Try locally made products and support the local businesses.
