Two hours to the southeast of Taylors is Congaree National Park, one of the few parks on the eastern seaboard. Having only been created in 2003, it is also one of the newest national parks. Hiking, kayaking, and fishing are all popular activities here, but one of the park’s most unique activities is seeing the synchronous fireflies at the end of May or early in June. The month-long display of synchronized flashing is part of the insects’ mating ritual and can only be seen at three locations in the western hemisphere.
