The river is the beating heart of Pedernales Falls State Park, so the first thing you should do when you arrive in the park is head for the water. During the warmer months, the river is a hive of activity as visitors young and old head to the designated swimming area to cool off. The river itself flows over and around massive chunks of limestone, so while its waters are often calm they can also get quite rough and chaotic in parts. As a result, tubing, canoeing, and kayaking are also popular pastimes on the river, with put-in spots available at the swimming area and on Trammell's Crossing Trail. For safety reasons, put-ins and take-outs are prohibited in the area surrounding Pedernales Falls. Speaking of the falls, the river's waterfalls make an impressive sight when in full flow. For the best views, take the half-mile Twin Falls Nature Trail to the scenic overlook and don't forget to pack your camera. If you'd prefer a more challenging hike, there are plenty more options to choose from. With 20-odd miles of trails snaking their way through the park, hikers and mountain bikers are well catered for. If you're setting out on foot, the six-mile Wolf Mountain Trail takes you around Tobacco and Wolf mountains and also leads you to beautiful Arrowhead Pool. If you're getting around using pedal power, the 10-mile Juniper Ridge Trail offers a wide range of technical obstacles and is designed for advanced riders.
