My first love, even from a young age, was plants. As a kid, my dad, my brother, and I would go camping with the Cub Scouts. I developed a love for the outdoors—nature, the stars, wildlife, the ocean—and the feeling of dirt on my hands and feet as I explored. For years, I worked in office settings and lived in cities. I would stare at paintings and photos of wild, remote places, wishing I could be there. A collection of houseplants and a small garden plot were my only steady connection to the places I dreamed of. After too many years of city life taking its toll on my health and spirit—even while building a successful career—I decided to leave it behind and chase a dream, a fantasy really: to be on the road full time, exploring, wandering from one national park to the next, meeting others also caught by wanderlust, and immersing myself in nature. Leaving the noise of the “real world” behind has been a healing journey and an experience of a lifetime that I don’t take for granted.
