Discover Port Sanilac, MI
Port Sanilac is a town in Sanilac County, Michigan that began as a lumberjack settlement named Bark Shanty sometime prior to the mid-1840s. By 1857, the town had a sawmill, a schoolhouse, a general store, and a post office, and it was renamed at this time to its present name. Local lore suggests that it was named after a local Wyandotte Indian chief. It has a 20-room Victorian mansion built in 1872 and owned by a Dr. Joseph Loop; the mansion is now home to the Sanilac County Museum. A kerosene burning lighthouse was built in 1886 and was wired for electricity in 1924 (it still stands today). There is a designated shipwreck preserve, the Sanilac Shores Underwater Preserve, that is a popular dive spot for scuba divers.
Book an RV in Sanilac County, and you are on your way to an epic vacation that only an RV could provide. While you are there, take some time to check out other nearby communities. Port Hope was named by its founder when, while rowing to shore in a storm, he promised himself he would give the town this name if he survived and made it to shore. Pigeon has been investing in windmills in and around its territory since 2007. Caro was originally named Centerville, but its name was changed to a variant of Cairo (a city in Egypt). Imlay City hosts an annual fair at the Eastern Michigan Fairgrounds which includes a rodeo and a demolition derby. Richmond is the starting point for a multi-use, non-motorized trail, the Macomb Orchard Trail, which links to the Paint Creek Trail and two other parks. Your Port Sanilac travel trailer rental is how you will experience this vibrant and historical area one day at a time.
The Great Outdoors
Wolcott Mill Historic Center is one of three areas that combine to form Wolcott Mill Metropark. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and consists of a grist and feed mill and a barn museum. It has a pond and antique farming equipment that visitors can see up close. The other sections of the metropark include a working farm and petting zoo, and a solitary area near a river where visitors can enjoy the natural settings. Horseback riding is also allowed on the park trails.
Stony Creek Metropark is a cultivated urban park that is open year-round. Guests can fish or swim in the on-site lake, hike, bike, or in-line skate the paved trails that wind through woodlands, wetlands, and tallgrass prairie. In the winter, visitors can cross-country ski, snowshoe, or ride the short hills on snowboards. There are picnic areas and comfort stations and areas designated for team sports or group activities such as baseball, volleyball, and basketball.
Head an hour's drive south with the Port Sanilac camper rental, and you can visit Lake St. Clair Metropark, a cultivated outdoor recreation area centered around the similarly named lake. The park has an elevated boardwalk that overlooks the shoreline and rustic trails that pass through marshland, meadows, and cottonwood tree groves. Bird watchers can crow over the hundreds of species that regularly or permanently reside here, while those who want to get the blood flowing can hike and bike the park trails. There is an Olympic size pool and also a sandy beach for the swimmers to enjoy. Fishing and ice fishing are also allowed.

Exploring The City
The residents of Port Sanilac can be innovative, to say the least and this shows in one of its attractions, a public theater that has been built out of an old renovated barn; rumors suggest that there is an owl who occasionally takes in a show from up in the rafters and has been known to buzz the audience below. A local museum offers twice-daily guided tours of a historic house and the village that surrounds it; guests have the option of doing one or both of the tours. A historic lighthouse is now a private residence and/or bed and breakfast, but the owners occasionally offer tours, and it is a good photo-op and worth seeing, if only from a distance. Don't forget to take your Port Sanilac motorhome rental for a spin around the block while you have the chance; driving an RV can be addictive, and you may find yourself wanting to keep going once you've started (go for it).
There are several restaurants on hand in Port Sanilac and more options farther out, but the local venues are privately owned and operated. One lodge-style restaurant is located in a roomy older house that has been restored and has a nice ambiance. It has a vaulted ceiling and fireplace, plus an abundance of comfortable wooden furniture and an outdoor patio that can be enjoyed during the summer. The venue is open for lunch and dinner and has craft beers on tap. Guests dining here should try the steak fajitas. Portions are large, and you should take your leftovers back to your Port Sanilac luxury RV rental for a late-night snack.
