Julie Krueger Oct 14, 2025, 00:18 CDT It's been a really long time since It rented from outdoorsy. The last time was seamless and perfect about 5 years ago. So for my husband's 60th birthday, I wanted to rent an rv and spend a weekend at the Texas Ren Fest. I looked on Outdoorsy and found an RV listing with great pictures and a decent listing - Cozy Gulf Stream RV – Perfect Getaway on Wheels-2019 Gulf Stream Conquest Sleeps 6 • 23 ft I messaged the owner and asked about pick up and drop off times because I could not find that in the app. He told me if I accepted his offer, then we could talk about times. I told him I didn't want to commit to anything until I was sure it worked for our schedule. He said he would be flexible. I went and looked at other rv's — then he messaged saying he would work with me on times, generally it would be be for 8am and after 3pm. We messaged, and I met him after work to get the camper. He had it parked under a shade tree and it was about 6:05 in the evening. He walked me around the camper and showed me hookups and compartments. We went inside, he showed me the battery shut-off valve and the switch panel. He started the generator and warned me not to turn down the AC to quickly or it would not keep up. I noticed it was a little dusty but wasn't concerned given the last experience I had was so great. He showed me the manual he made and promised everything I needed was in the manual. As I left, drove to the end of the street and decided to try the backup camera: it had no picture. I messaged and asked if that was in the manual he said no it should just come on automatically when I put it in reverse. When I got to the gas station I found that it was pointed straight down. I climbed the ladder and fixed it. Enis had to know that it was not working properly as I watched him back it out of his driveway when I arrived. But he didn't bother fixing it. I got up the next morning and opened up the camper door and the blinds to see that it wasn’t just dusty, it was filthy. I vacuumed every fabric surface as well as the floor and had to mop as there were stains all up and down the floor hallway. Every flat surface got wiped down from the cabinets to the drawers to the table, counters, and the bathroom. I started the generator to be sure that the slide worked, and put the bed out and vacuumed around it, and mopped. After gathering my cleaning supplies and taking them back out of the camper, I went into the camper and went to retract the slide. The slide made noise, but it didn’t come in. I went over and looked, and the slide was caught on the bed. I had to pick up the portion of the bed that was not part of the slide in order for the slide to then come in. During the time I had the generator running, I could smell the propane that I had smelled the night before, when picking it up from Enis. When I pointed the smell out to Enis, he made some comment about having a natural gas leak in his yard. That may be true, but I also believe propane was leaking from that camper. Sure enough, the propane sensor went off inside the camper. I shut everything down and went in to pack, not sure what to do. Later, I decided to figure out if the pump was working for the water in the bathroom, shower, toilet, and sink, I went back out and tried to start the generator. It would not start. I texted Enis he told me to give it a rest for an hour. I thought, well, that was a rather large inconvenience, but I didn’t have a choice. I ran my errands. Once home, I decided to turn on the generator once again to check the bathroom water situation and also try to get the refrigerator and freezer to cool down so I could pack them. The generator did start, and before long, the propane sensor went off again, so I went outside and turned off the propane tanks. I tried to open the window over the dining table, but it would not open. The generator ran for about 30 minutes and then died. At this point I realized to salvage the weekend, I was going to need to hope that if hooked up to electricity, water, and sewage, we could make it through the weekend. I didn’t have time to find another camper, nor the time to return the one I was renting. I went in the house, got online, and found a campground to rent for $100 a night. My husband came home from work. I finished packing the camper, and we took off on our trip to Plantersville, Texas that evening. We got our camping spot. I hooked up the city water and the electricity. I was hoping at this point the refrigerator and freezer would start cooling; they did not. I checked the manual. There was nothing in the manual about the freezer or the refrigerator. I googled it, and Google said that the refrigerator and freezer would run on the propane until it was hooked to city electricity, and then it would cool using electricity, so I wouldn’t need the propane if I didn’t use the stove. When I informed Enis that the fridge and freezer weren’t working, he said, well it in the shop recently and worked then. The light on the inside didn’t even come on. The Ac never really cooled below about 78 degrees. Thank goodness the blights were cool so we could sleep. Sunday morning, I hooked up the sewer line, and once I opened it, we could smell the sewage inside of the camper. Mid-morning, Enis asked when we would be returning the camper. Mind you the only communication he had with me about this prior was that it would be fine anytime after 3PM because I specifically asked if we could bring it in at 7PM, but he didn’t answer that. When I said we would be back around 5:30, he said that was inconvenient for him because he had volleyball games that evening. I told him we really didn’t want to leave the fair early. We paid to get in for the day, and it would work best for us to return it between five and six. At first he said he’d have a family member meet us and then texted and asked if I could just leave the keys on the porch. The whole experience with the camper and Enis was awful. Each time I let him know about a problem, he acted like it was because I didn’t know what I was doing. I rented this camper for my husband‘s birthday, and also in hopes of getting my husband on board with buying us a camper. At this point, I don’t think he ever will do that. I think at minimum I should be refunded enough money to cover our camping spot and the prep fee, since it wasn’t truly prepped, more things went wrong than went right. At first I thought about calling Outdoorsy, but I didn’t want to spend my weekend going back and forth with Outdoorsy and Enis about the issues with the camper. That’s not how you spend a quality weekend with your family. And I even thought about just returning it and chalking it up to a bad experience because I didn’t read enough of the fine print, but that’s not truly fair either. Both Enis and Outdoorsy had a responsibility to provide me with a fully functioning camper since I paid both Enis and all Outdoorsy fees, including the $750 deposit. Again, I’m requesting a refund of at least $200 to cover my camping spot as well as the prep fee since I did the prepping and limped through the weekend trying to make the best of it. I also returned the camper with more gas in it than when I drove away from Enis, and then Enis charged me for extra mileage when I was well below the daily limit each day. When I asked about that, he blamed the website.
