Discover Bangor, ME
Maine has a reputation for being a vast expanse of wildness or having hipster-type cities. And, though, while the assumptions aren’t totally incorrect, there is more to Maine than meets the immediate eye, so consider a luxury motorhome rental in Bangor. Less known than the popular destination Portland or the smaller coastal towns, Bangor has the same to offer with a different flare.
Like many of the larger populated areas, Bangor is a port city, lying on the Penobscot River. In its early days, logs were chopped from the Maine North Woods and floated down the river to be processed in the city-based mills. Lumbering was replaced as an economic profit with the pulp and paper industry in the modern era. Bangor has been built up and modernized; now sitting as the third largest city behind Portland, Lewiston. Just remember when you’re in your Bangor motorhome rental, it’s pronounced “Bang-or” not “Bang-er.”
The Great Outdoors
For those who are more suited to quick jaunts outside, Bangor has two smaller parks within city limits. Cascade Park has a beautifully maintained water fountain and garden as its center. The open green space invites picnics and lawn games, and the paved trails offers 20 minutes of walking. While Cascade Park sits across from the river, Penobscot River Walkway runs parallel. Walk, bike, or jog down the path. Visitors also use this public space for bird watching. The walkway is also a nice post-dinner evening stroll.
Bangor does cater to those who crave more than just a small park as well. The Bangor City Park encompasses 680 acres of forest and habitat land. Nine miles are dedicated to hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. No matter the time of year you visit Bangor with your RV rental, you’ll be able to utilized Bangor City Park fully. Despite its name, the park is privately owned and not associated with the city or local land trust.
If you’re willing to drive a bit to a recognized national park, Acadia National Park lies an hour southwest of Bangor. With seven peaks sitting above 1000 feet, it’s no surprise this park garners an impressive 3.3 million visitors annually. Hikers will be like children in candy shops exploring the 158 miles worth. For those less inclined to set out alone, you can set up a ranger-guided tour. Acadia is the prime example of Maine wilderness.
It’s rumored that America’s favorite giant lumberjack Paul Bunyan and his blue ox Babe called Bangor’s woods their home. If you’re into folklore and definitely want to camp out in Bangor, Paul Bunyan Campground is waiting for you. Able to accommodate any sized trailer, this campground has you covered when in your Bangor travel trailer rental. Locally and family owned, Paul Bunyan is set up for an inclusive experience with onsite planned activities, play areas for the kids, and hookups for the RV.
However, we know that some travelers like spending time immersed in the wilderness, and that includes RV rental trips to Penobscot County. So, if you’re not totally set on staying in Bangor, staying within Acadia National Park is always an option. Definitely make your reservation at one of the five camping sites available in advance. Once you do, you’ll have access to the entire park, full hookups (site choice dependent), and plenty of space to spread out.
Exploring the City
If you’re a fan of spook in the form of novels, you’ll be quite pleased to know by visiting the area in your Bangor camper rental; you’ve landed yourself in the same city as Stephen King and his house. Once you’re done fangirling, take the time to look from outside. Mr. King still occupies the house so best not to disturb him. Pictures are encouraged, however.
The kids might not appreciate the iron cast spider on King’s gate, so take them to Maine Discovery Museum to lighten the mood. This three-floored wonderland is jam-packed with interactive exhibits covering various subjects. It’s meant for kids, but oftentimes the adults join in on the fun too. Everyone deserves life’s simple pleasures.
No kids, no problem. Take a night out on the town. Catch a show at the Penobscot Theatre Company or the Bangor Waterfront Pavilion. Of course, you’ll want to check what’s playing prior to your arrival. Or, have a little gambling fun at Hollywood Casino. Whether you get lucky or not, you’ve won the jackpot just by choosing Bangor.
