In the world of winter sports destinations, Revelstoke needs no introduction. But while many visitors to this British Columbia city spend most of their time on the slopes, there's a whole lot more to see and do in this stunningly beautiful region.
Located approximately two and a half hours east of Kamloops and Kelowna, Revelstoke sits on the banks of the Columbia River. This quaint community offers a huge range of excellent attractions to suit any outdoor enthusiast, including gorgeous national parks, awesome hiking and biking trails, and adventure opportunities galore. And with a host of campgrounds and RV parks available nearby, exploring Revelstoke in a rental RV is easy. Here's how you can plan the perfect visit.
Revelstoke may be best known for its ski resort, but there are a host of other excellent outdoor attractions within easy reach of the city. One of the highlights is, of course, Mount Revelstoke National Park, found just to the city's northeast.
The park boasts lush forests and beautiful mountain scenery, much of which is easily accessible for visitors. One highlight is to head for the summit to take in the breathtaking views — it's only a short walk from the parking lot — while the Giant Cedars Boardwalk Trail through old-growth forest is a must-do. Mount Revelstoke National Park also allows you to take in some of the best scenery from the comfort of your vehicle, with the Meadows in the Sky Parkway climbing 26 kilometers (16 miles) uphill.
Next, you might like to steer your RV rental from Revelstoke towards Lake Revelstoke. This Columbia River lake found just to the north of the city covers more than 100 square kilometers (40 square miles) and is set against a beautiful backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Canoeing and kayaking are popular pastimes on the lake during summer, while keen anglers can try their luck at catching kokanee salmon, burbot, and a variety of trout species here.
If you head south from Revelstoke and follow the Arrow Lake shoreline, you'll soon find yourself at Blanket Creek Provincial Park. This 785-acre park is a popular family holiday destination where you can indulge in a huge range of outdoor recreational activities. Highlights include hiking trails, a man-made swimming lagoon, and an adventure playground that the kids will love. Kayaking and canoeing are also popular here, while the hike to beautiful Sutherland Falls is well worth tackling.
If you'd like to camp with an RV rental in Revelstoke, book an RV in British Columbia and then find somewhere to stay. Happily, there are several campgrounds and RV parks nearby where you can park your rental camper near Revelstoke for a few nights or longer.
One option worth considering is Revelstoke Campground, which sits in a wooded meadow a few minutes outside of downtown. There are almost 200 sites available here, including full-hookup and pull-through sites, while an outdoor pool is open during peak periods.
Another park worth a look is Lamplighter Campground, which sits on the opposite side of the Columbia River to Revelstoke. This quiet park features more than 50 sites for RVs and tents and is open from the start of May until the end of September. Sites are level and grassy, Wi-Fi is available, and pets are welcome.
Of course, you might also like to park your Revelstoke rental RV in Blanket Creek Provincial Park, which boasts more than 100 RV-friendly campsites. Showers, toilets, and an RV dump station are all provided. Leashed pets are welcome in the park, and there's also an off-leash area where your pooch can play in the water.
When you set out to explore in your rental motorhome near Revelstoke, you'll soon find that there's plenty to see and do in the local area. One of the highlights is Revelstoke Dam, which spans the Columbia River just a few miles north of the city. This massive dam is a sight to behold all on its own, and there's also a visitors' center to help you learn more about the dam's history and features. Guided and self-guided tours are available. You can ride an elevator to the top of the dam to take in the spectacular valley views. Educational exhibits help keep younger visitors entertained.
If you're keen for more of an action-packed adventure, head to The Enchanted Forest, located within half an hour of Revelstoke. This family-friendly attraction is the site of an old-growth forest with more than 350 fairytale figurines, not to mention one enormous treehouse. There's also an adventure park on-site with ziplines, a giant swing, and more. You'll also get a chance to watch the seasonal salmon run in the Eagle River.
History buffs will also find plenty to enjoy in Revelstoke at the Revelstoke Railway Museum. The museum charts the history of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the Columbia Mountains through a range of collections and exhibits. Highlights include a Mikado P-2k class steam locomotive, a solarium lounge car built in 1929, and an old baggage car. The museum is open daily from May until mid-October, and open during selected hours across the rest of the year.
